大統領選から１年、支持率が低下したバイデン政権

　１年前、バイデン氏は米国の歴史上最多の得票で大統領に選ばれた。

　それだけの国民の声を受けたことを思い起こして、バイデン氏はこれから一日一日、米国をよりよく立て直す「Build Back Better」というバイデン氏の政策をやっていくというのである。

　ところでそういうバイデン氏にとって好ましくない調査結果が明らかにされた。

　ＵＳＡトゥデイが発表した調査結果は、バイデン政権にとって厳しいものであった。

支持率

　バイデン大統領に対して、支持は３７．８％、不支持は５９．０％。

　バイデン大統領は１年前に米国の歴史上最多の得票で大統領に選ばれたと言ったが、現在の支持率はこれだけ低くなっている。

　ハリス副大統領に対して、支持は２７．８％、不支持は５１．２％。

　ハリス副大統領も期待されていたが、支持率はこれだけ低くなってしまった。

　全体の４６％がバイデン氏は 期待より悪い仕事をしていると回答している。１年前にバイデン氏に投票した人の１６％がバイデン氏は期待より悪い仕事をしていると回答している。

Nearly half of those surveyed, 46%, say Biden has done a worse job as president than they expected, including 16% of those who voted for him. Independents, by 7-1 (44%-6%), say he’s done worse, not better, than they expected.

Two-thirds of Americans (66%) say the country has gotten on the wrong track; one in five (20%) say it is headed in the right direction. That’s no better than the public’s uneasy view during the final weeks of the Trump administration.

The infrastructure bill, which passed Friday with some bipartisan support, is backed by 2-1 (61%-32%) among those surveyed. The supporters include a third of Republicans.

Americans are closely divided on the “Build Back Better” act pressed by congressional Democrats. In the poll, 47% support the $1.85 trillion bill; 44% oppose it.

　バイデン氏は米国史上最多の投票を得たことを根拠として、立て直し政策を進めていくというが、その法案が米国民の間に対立を生んでいるというのである。

次の大統領選挙

　２０２４年にまたバイデン氏が大統領に選ばれることを望むか、という質問に対して、望むと答えたのは２９．１％、望まないと答えたのは６３．７％であった。

　それに対してトランプ氏が選ばれることを望むと答えたのは３５．６％、望まないと答えたのは５８・４％であった。

　トランプ氏の方が優勢のようである。

　バイデン氏に投票した人の中で、５０％はバイデン氏がまた大統領に選ばれることを望むと答えたが、３９％が望まないと答えた。

　それに対して１年前にトランプ氏に投票した人の中では、６５％がトランプ氏が大統領に選ばれることを望むと答え、２６％が望まないと答えた。

Among those who voted for Biden last year, almost 4 in 10, 39%, say they hope he doesn’t run for another term; 50% hope he will run. Among those who voted for Trump last year, 1 in 4, 26%, hope he won’t run again; 65% hope he will.

　大統領選挙が今日バイデン氏とトランプ氏の間で行われたとすると、４４％がトランプ氏に投票すると言い、４０％がバイデン氏に投票すると言ったという。

If the presidential election were today between Biden and Trump, 44% say they would vote for Trump, 40% for Biden, 11% for an unnamed third-party candidate. In the election last year, Biden beat Trump 54%-47%.

支持率

　バイデン大統領に対して、支持は４２％、不支持率は５４％。

In the poll, 42 percent of adults say they approve of Biden’s overall job as president — a decline of 7 points since August, with much of the attrition coming from key parts of the Democratic base.
That’s compared to 54 percent who say they disapprove of the president’s job, which is up 6 points since August.

Using Gallup’s historical data, Biden’s approval rating in this poll (42 percent) is lower than any other modern first-year president’s at a similar point in time, with the key exception of Donald Trump (whose approval averaged 37 percent in fall 2017).

　４月には５３％であった支持率は、８月には４９％、１０月には４２％と下がってきている。

間違った方向

　ＮＢＣの調査では、国が間違った方向をとってきたと答えた人は７１％である。ＵＳＡトゥデイの６６％より多い。

　共和党の９３％がそう答えているのみならず、民主党の４８％もそう答えている。無党派の７０％もそう答えている。

Also in the NBC News poll, 71 percent of Americans say they believe the country is headed in the wrong direction, up 8 points since August.
That includes 93 percent of Republicans, 70 of independents and even 48 percent of Democrats.

Maybe even more troubling for Biden, just 37 percent of adults give him high marks — on a 5-point scale — for being competent and effective as president, and only 28 percent give him high marks for uniting the country.
By contrast, 50 percent give him low scores for being competent, and 51 percent give him low scores for uniting the country.

When asked which party better handles particular issues, Republicans hold double-digit advantages on border security (by 27 points), inflation (24 points), crime (22 points), national security (21 points), the economy (18 points) and being effective and getting things done (13 points).
By contrast, Democrats hold double-digit edges on abortion (by 10 points), the coronavirus (12 points) and climate change (24 points), but all of those advantages are smaller than those the party enjoyed during the 2020 election.

　２０２１年１月のバイデン氏の大統領就任演説は、多くの人に絶賛されていた。

　しかしその時にバイデン氏はまだ何もしていなかった。

　トランプ前大統領は２０２０年の大統領選挙の時にバイデン氏を、言うだけで行わない人と評していた。（”You’re all talk and no action”）

　バイデン氏がまだ何もしていないのに演説だけで称賛されている光景を見て、私はその言葉を思い出した。

　大統領就任演説から９カ月、バイデン政権の行いを見て、多くの人が期待外れだったと言っている。間違った方向をとってきたと言っている。

　バイデン氏の大統領就任演説で特に称賛されたのは「団結 Unity 」ということであった。

　バイデン氏の思いはアメリカを一つにすることにあるというのである。

　ところが上にとりあげたＮＢＣの調査によると、 団結するということに関して、バイデン氏を高く評価している人は２８％しかおらず、５１％が低く評価している。

　そもそもバイデン氏の「団結 Unity 」とは、大統領選で多くの票を得たトランプ氏を排除するものであったが、このごろは民主党をまとめることもできないと言われている。

　政治家は行いによって評価されるものである。

　ところが言葉を行いと切り離して持ち上げる反知性主義が流行っている。

　ニューヨーク州知事であったクオモ氏がその行いから切り離された言葉によって称賛されていたことはその代表的なものである。

　バイデン氏はクオモ氏以上にその言葉が行いから切り離されて持ち上げられた人であった。

　人類はそういう反知性主義から知性に向かって進まなくてはならない。

　バイデン氏はこれから行いによって現在の調査結果を覆すことができるであろうか？

　我等は知性に従おう。
